type='text'>The time is NOW

So it's been awhile since i wrote anything on the blog and have been inspired and gently cajoled by reading everyone else's entries in the past week.
Now i'm here i don't really know what to say, it just feels comforting to write somehow, a reminder that we are all in this despite the fact that we haven't actually physically worked together.

I don't how it is for you guys but as my screening day approaches i'm beginning to feel myself grip more tightly to the work. I've suddenly slowed down and feel reluctant to let it go. Normally I'm very anxious to complete and then relieved to move onto the next thing...

Anyway i know this is partly to do with the usual nervousness of sharing the work but partly it's a desire to keep the work in a never-ending and evolving state.

I really hope we can all get together at the end of the project...a meal maybe? I just think we should all celebrate.

So well, this wasn't quite the blog i had in mind...just wanted to say Hi i guess.

See you all soon

WHO IS WHO

RIZWAN'S JOURNAL, APRIL 21, 2009
"...its a warm evening and just when everyone was tucking themselves into the fabric of their beds, something else was waking - waiting quietly in the shadows - watching, listening, working away under the lights of pixels and halogen lamps, the ink running thick through the streets of pages and screens. Yesterday brought some particular challenges with aggressive photo-seekers and officious security guards asking her to move on due to Health & Safety concerns - ironic considering the 48-point Health & Safety check Kerry and Andy carried out before mounting the 'Professional' ladders. There seems to be a lot of public support for permanent elevated lookout spots at the various sites, particularly by the rivers.

We had a surprise visit by Rizwan, Shaheeda and Abdullah which led to some informal sharing of ideas between Hiddenplace artists. It's been great meeting so many interesting creative people, discussing initial responses and ideas and sharing observations as we walk around the sites.

We had several conversations yesterday about parameters, or lack of them. It's important to restate that we want Hiddenplace to be as open as possible to your own creative responses, ideas, themes, preferred methods of working etc. The structure, the sites, the festival format and the overarching theme of Hiddenplace (in all the many senses we have discussed) provide the creative framework. Although inevitably there are some logistical parameters (budget, timescale etc), we hope these will not be too restrictive.

Please let either myself or Ian know if you have any questions, comments or ideas you'd like to discuss in advance of the submission deadline (1.00pm, Friday 23rd Jan). We'll share these on the blog unless you specifically ask us not to (please let us know).

Really looking forward to seeing how your ideas develop - hope you enjoy the journey, everyone.

Alison White - Writer

For Hidden Places, I would like to explore the idea of generating an urban myth for a local area. I am interested in the oral tradition that is strong in young people for telling of strange and mysterious events that (supposedly) happened somewhere within the locale. These tales are always told as if they happened to someone close enough to the teller to be believable, but just distant enough to not be verifiable; the locations are never very far away and are visitable and the time that the events happened is never so long ago; these stories occupy that wonderful line where fiction becomes fact.

For the Hidden Place, I would develop an urban myth that develops around a young girl who mysteriously disappeared some years before, leaving at the Hidden Place site a pair of old shoes and a letter to her father who is away on a trip to Pakistan. The storyline might develop along the lines of the young girl had been waiting for her father to return from a trip to Pakistan, bringing her back a promised pair of red slipper shoes. But the father never returns, she writes him letters but he stops replying to them. The girl is said to have made her way to the site, removed her shoes and is never seen again.

The visitors site might, therefore, be created as though it has become a tribute to the mysterious girl, part memorial, part tribute, part gifts for the young girl as though the public have come over a period of time and left things for the missing child. At the site there could be text made up through a collection of ‘found’ documents: letters, newspaper cuttings that could be presented as information to help the public make sense of the site - like a ‘mockumentary’ information board as well as being gathered into a collection of documents that appear as part of the marketing for the site as well as excerpts from the texts appearing at the site itself.

The installation itself would contain some ‘concrete’ evidence that the girl had indeed disappeared without trace; the site would have some information about the girl, old photographs in frames, text carved into trees or left in envelopes by the public in response to hearing her story. The centre of the Hidden Place might be the old pair of shoes that the girl left behind as well as tantalising excerpts from the text that survives about the girl. The site would make use of artefacts as if they had been left by local people to remember the lost girl - red ribbons tied to the site, red shoes left as gifts for her. The site would encourage local people to ‘fill in the gaps’ in the story of the girl by thinking about what might have happened to her - why her father never returned, why the girl took off her old shoes before she disappeared, engage in whether they believe the ghostly sitings of her around the site in the late evening are true ...

Depending on what is possible technically at the site, the myth might employ soundscapes of local people telling the ‘story’ of the girl. The site could potentially draw from two cultural traditions through having the link to Pakistan - the soundscapes could be bi-lingual, as the girl might have been, the myth would have skeleton details that the visitors to the site can fill in for themselves as they create the myth in discussion and imagination.

It would be possible to provide a series of workshops for young people around the site - drawing on my experience as a writer in education which develops the myth and growths the mythology of the site in response. This would therefore be a dynamic site which develops through word of mouth and grows as the public add their own gifts to the mystery girl.

Everyone loves a local mystery - is this Hidden Place the site where a young girl was last seen/did she set off to find her father/did she die here/is this the place she comes back to in order to read the letters left for her, wear the gifts of red shoes people leave for her?

Alison White is a Burnley based writer. She is regularly published in poetry magazines and journals and her first play The Hanged Man, written in conjunction with Dean Ashton, was nominated for a prestigious Manchester Evening News Theatre Award. She has a Masters Degree in Creative Writing. Her first chapbook of poems is a handcrafted pamphlet entitled Being Heathcliff’s Boot which collects her published and newer work. She works as a writer in education and as an agent for creative change in education. Her particuluar interest is writing with young people for creative community building through writing and storytelling. She has managed large scale projects within education for creative change, many of which have explored the effect of the use of space in learning. In the new year she will work as a living art installation exposing the process behind writing through working and writing ‘live’, her work in draft being projected onto screens within Burnley Library as she writes a collection of short pieces in response to the people passing by - a fact to fictionalised snapshot of Burnley town in 2009. As part of that project, she will invite the young people of Burnley to engage with her on journeys of discovery in creativity. To experience and inspire one anothers lives through various forms of art and the human voice.

Hiddenplace - an invitation

In November 2008, we sent the following invitation to over 70 artists, creative individuals and organisations based around Burnley and Pennine Lancashire. We have shortlisted 14 artists to develop their ideas towards one of 7 commissions for Hiddenplace. We set up this blog to document their responses and provide a space for sharing ideas and presenting work in progress.

Ian Banks & Noah Rose 2/12/08

Dear Burnley Creative,
We are writing to you as an artist or creative individual based in or around Burnley to see if you are interested in being part of ‘Hiddenplace’

What?
‘Hiddenplace’ is a showcase of visual, performing, and new media arts, a series of temporary commissions for new creative work in a range of media, an animation programme for hidden, forgotten or disused spaces.

Where?
Various locations around Burnley town centre - see the attached map for details.

When?
The individual commissions will be programmed together to be launched every 2 weeks during spring/ summer 2009. Please mark your email ‘Hiddenplace - statement of interest’ and send it to us by:
5.00pm on Thursday 27th November.

We’re looking for a small amount of information at this stage. We would like to see:
• A short statement of interest– telling us a bit about your practice and why you’d like to be considered for the project.

• Some examples (up to 5) of previous work – images/ descriptions/ audio files and/ or a link to any websites, if appropriate. (Jpegs, MP3s, Quicktime movies or Powerpoint/ Keynote presentations, please)

Who are we?
We are Ian Banks and Noah Rose - an architect and artist respectively, who have been working jointly and individually on a series of creative projects aimed at exploring and transforming Burnley town centre. We are responsible for curating ‘Hiddenplace’ and managing the project until its completion.

Why Burnley? Why now?
As you know Burnley is a town going through a huge period of change. Burnley Borough Council commissioned us in 2006 to research a piece of work called the Burnley Creative Scope. This fed into the Masterplan and Public Realm Strategy for the town centre. Some of you contributed to it and told us you were interested in undertaking some actual creative projects in the town. We think this is an interesting way to get people discussing the current and future use of space in the town centre and to begin a debate on who the town centre is for and what kinds of activities can go on there.

Why ‘Hiddenplace’?
The title comes from a song by Björk on her album ´Vespertine´. We think it sums up the quiet excitement and secret passion you can have for a thing, place or person, which only you know and which you keep safe from the world. We have found Burnley to be full of interesting hidden places with secrets to be examined, interpreted and uncovered, perhaps only partly. We encourage you to explore them and discover your own curiosities and wonders, small or large. These treasures will be yours alone to decide to share or keep secret and the manner in which you reveal them is up to you.

Lucy Bergman - Installation and Multimedia

“Now, I have been slightly shy
but I can smell a pinch of hope…”

It’s like Burnley admitting her secret to you and inviting you to look a little closer isn’t it?

There has been a sense of hope building in Burnley for some time and more than any other area I’ve worked in and it seems to be building on creative sparks rather than bricks. Although I have recently moved, I was born in Burnley and over the years have spent a lot of time walking or hanging about on the streets, either as a youth trying to find some place to sit and be with friends or as adult trying to talk to youths about where they would like to sit and be with friends!

The thing that has always struck me is how often I get lost! I seem to think I know exactly where I’m going but will end up under a fly over, down a dead end street or round the back of some factory or other thinking “I was sure this was the right way” It’s like Burnley chooses to move around while you’ve got your back turned, as if she just wants to mix it up a little so you don’t forget about all her little short cuts and secret places.

(Lifts up her petticoats, shows you her Adidas and sits back down in a different place)

I would love to be part of the Hiddenplace project, being able to just respond entirely in my own way to the hidden corners and layers of Burnley fills my brain with possibility. It feels intimate and mysterious yet playful.

The idea of creating a little secret, a beguiling or confounding art work left out there in the open, in an otherwise overlooked place is fascinating and exciting. To make a place into a thing of beauty even for a short time by putting a little piece of yourself into it is very appealing, especially if it is a spark that along with others could start a chain reaction and electrify a whole town!

Over the years I have been involved in lots of community engagement and process led projects. This has been incredibly valuable and exciting in its own way but it is rare that I have been able to react and create something in my own way, I’ve generally had to facilitate the expression of other peoples ideas. I do feel it would be important to interact with people in some way, to not isolate the work or the audience but it feels refreshing to have such an open brief.

For this project I’d like to think of myself as a kind of translator or narrator on behalf of the particular space. I’d want to try and find a way to connect and delight people by capturing the essence of an emotion or a moment of beauty and suggesting our shared emotional experiences of the world around us. I like to draw attention to the narrative that exists between people and places, between buildings and landscape, between objects and universal themes. I suppose I am a romantic and can’t help but try to create a poem from the dialogue of everyday life. I like how extraordinary the ordinary can become if you just take the time, not just to look, but to see it, frame it, hear it and stop to drink it in for a moment.

I don’t like to pin myself down to one art form in particular as I prefer to realise ideas using whatever art form seems the most appropriate or beautiful. I think about an idea and then puzzle out how to manifest it within budget I suppose! I tend to use film, words and handmade objects a lot. I use super 8 and digital film, create stop-frame animations with objects, drawings and models, I write poems, prose and stories and make books. I also sing, make music, dance and have lots of conversations with people.

I am a highly organised, reliable, hardworking and resourceful person and up for nearly any creative challenge, I would be very happy to have the opportunity to take part in this project…So I hope to hear from you!

lucy

<embed src="http://www.youtube.com/get_player" type="application/x-shockwave-flash"width="320" height="266" bgcolor="#FFFFFF"flashvars="flvurl=http://v12.nonxt1.googlevideo.com/videoplayback?id%3Db2f4a08d0130f832%26itag%3D5%26app%3Dblogger%26ip%3D0.0.0.0%26ipbits%3D0%26expire%3D1331682707%26sparams%3Did,itag,ip,ipbits,expire%26signature%3D8595F958C2B724111B71A11BD16E6ED6E0C33310.6BC2600FCB8277A7A588713C88D26B2398C9101B%26key%3Dck1&iurl=http://video.google.com/ThumbnailServer2?app%3Dblogger%26contentid%3Db2f4a08d0130f832%26offsetms%3D5000%26itag%3Dw160%26sigh%3DEYvpKK7cp60_nvrVpnIQ4LnBEpk&autoplay=0&ps=blogger"allowFullScreen="true" />

William Titley - Installation and Multimedia

<img style="display:block; Since 1999, I have been investigating ideas about place and making work in response to its politics, its communities and using a variety of media including: performance, video, photography, documentary etc to engage with the essence of place and its de/re/construction.
Outcomes often include some form of public exhibition of artwork/s informed by indepth local research including direct consultation with the local community.
My work is process driven by local research: local history, direct spatial experience, site/materials and personal stories etc. all informing the development of ideas and eventual creation of artwork in whatever form it takes.

I would like to be considered for one of the projects in Burnley and would be particularly keen to work on a site on the River Brun if possible. However, I am interested in exploring the development of a sense of place in any given location and would thoroughly enjoy the opportunity to work in any of the initial sites proposed.

Please use the following links to access a sample of projects and information from my website:

Bridget
Bottles
History
My Place

Helmut Lemke - Sound Installation

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 204px; height: 320px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_f29DTRg0Iu0/STRdjjrpGjI/AAAAAAAAADY/RF2fP3ma8pE/s320/a_rootX6_besen_1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5274943929012787762" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 166px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_f29DTRg0Iu0/STRdfKXJrRI/AAAAAAAAADQ/fVPubkSrIwQ/s320/a_titel.gif" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5274943853496478994" />
'Hiddenplace' sounds like a unique oportunity to follow my research interests in site specific sounds and the communication of sounds closer to home.

I would like to investigate sounds of Burnley. The project sounds very exciting and I think that I could help contribute to its success. I am open to suggestions or approaches towards responding to the project and can work independently or collaboratively.

Given the opportunity to work on the project, I would be interested in the possibility of initiating a collaboration with a group of young mothers and their children living in Burnley and making work in response to their town through their experiences of it. In response to your ideas of uncovering hidden places, perhaps mapping their journey/s through the town with their children and/or through gathering and collecting stories of hidden places to be examined, interpreted and uncovered. The outputs of which and media choice would be pre-determined through consulting with this group and in meeting the aims/objectives of your project.

I am a visual artist, academic, feminist and socially engaged practitioner. My visual arts practice has been informed through my background in drawing and painting. I have produced work of a consistently high level that is both contextually challenging and utilises a wide range of media, making site specific installations animation, video, new media, sound and performance pieces.

The work is process driven and made in response to “site” and “situation”. I began working in this way after completing a residency at Brockhall Village, Lancashire which was once the site of an old hospital. Living and working on this site resulted in creating work with the performance artist Michael Mayhew where together we made site specific installations and performance work exploring narratives, objects and documents collected from the decaying hospital environment.

Current research is concerned with the female body and identity informed through a personal and political experience of motherhood, utilising reflection and reflexivity as a method of production and intellectual enquiry. This has led to the recent exhibition of ink drawings and books, “M(other)” at the Chapman Gallery in Salford. As a result of this exhibition I have been working in collaboration with the Midwifery department at the University. Together with the staff and students from the BA (Hon’s) Visual Arts Programme and the Midwifery department respectively, it has been proposed that a visual and text based artists book be produced exploring ideas of birth and creativity.

I am a socially engaged practitioner and have a history of working with a variety of collaborative partners from school children and teachers through to older people and health care practitioners developing and delivering arts projects in a wide variety of environments and contexts within the community, such as schools, hospitals, and sheltered housing. Clients and commissioners have included the NHS, Creative Partnerships, Salford City Council, the Museum of Science and Industry and Artists & Education. The delivery of these projects has had a range of positive outputs from increasing wellbeing and recovery in hospital patients through to improving creativity, literacy, self-esteem and knowledge of local history with school children.

Mark Cameron - Live Art Animateur

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 112px; height: 240px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_f29DTRg0Iu0/STRaE2CTvsI/AAAAAAAAACo/XPv3KATvaLI/s320/3042785599_4f804b30d5_m.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5274940102828867266" />
I organise a live art event that gathers together the country's freshest artists, designers, animators and filmakers to create work in live environments. Recent collaborations include;

-“Hey Lads ‘Hey” – an independent multimedia installation at Queen’s Mill, Burnley which focused on the impact of the industrial revolution at a micro level.

-A short time-lapse film documenting the work of ‘Julian Beaver’ commissioned by Mid-Pennine Arts.

-’Observing, interpreting and re-presenting a local environment: Burnley’ this was an interactive workshop and exhibition of work shifting perceptions of Burnley town centre and empowering local artists to create multi-media using with rudimentary, accessible technology in conjunction with The Folly Gallery.

-A Photo-documentary slideshow celebrating the positive impact and work of The Marsden Day Care Centre for Lancashire county Council.

Both artists were born and raised in the Burnley area and now work as lecturers in their respective disciplines in local colleges. The geography, folklore and legacy of Burnley has a huge impact on their independent work and is a thread that runs through their various collaborations. Being involved in ‘Hidden Place’ would enable them to engage the public of Burnley with the area’s industrial heritage in recognition that, at the height of its prosperity, East Lancashire’s economy was fuelled by industrialisation. Its legacy is most apparent through its built environment; housing stock, civic buildings, canal, mills and weaving sheds. This is the area’s heritage, which is largely interpreted as decline and rarely celebrated.

This project would enable Mark and Karl to deconstruct the sonic and visual environment into it’s often overlooked micro-components such as frequencies, spectrums & movement and to creatively reconstruct this information in unexpected ways: When one sees a cake, it is accepted as a cake. However, this cake can then be broken down into it’s core components such as eggs, flower, butter etc – the journey and context of the ingredients is crucial and fascinating and can be explored in depth, yet this can then be re-presented to the public in another format… as a Yorkshire Pudding for instance! This metaphor demonstrates how an innovative and often simple approach can be a catalyst for a change of perception of the local environment to inspire, enthuse and instigate discussion.

Karl Eden has been involved in the creation and delivery of music for twelve years as a performer, songwriter and producer in a successful, alternative, experimental music collective. During this time he has explored sound as an empowering abstract means to convey narratives and messages to audiences regardless of cultural and social barriers. The relationship between sound and space has always been a fascination, which led him to research and develop skills in sonic arts, initially borrowing largely from technical skills and a diverse interest in experimental and ambient composers. When working with audio Karl focuses on the dynamic contrast and manipulation of familiar sounds, drawing attention to the minutiae, with musical leanings to create implied and explicit pulses and rhythms in order to re-contextualise meanings.

Mark Tattersall has been working professionally within the media of photography and film for over 10 years working in a diverse range of contexts across the commercial and creative sectors. Mark currently lectures in the arts at Nelson and Colne College and this interest in conceptual ideas influences his professional practice. Although a skilled technician and leading local photographer his responses to creative projects lead to experimental image making and image capture across historic and new technologies. An underlying theme throughout his practice is the importance of place. Across creative projects centred around his locality, through to his work with Pendle and Lancashire’s tourist boards, this theme has been the foundation of his motivations.

Projects:

Julian Beever at Higherford mill. Time lapse video to mark the end of the ‘Land’ project which has been viewed by nearly 80000 people over the past 12 months -

‘Why I Live Here’ (Accrington, Hyndburn Mela and community festival association)

Photographs for publication, Film produced and exhibition at Howarth Gallery Accrington. In collaboration with William Titley.

Hyndburn Safe routes to School video editing.

Fururama project at the New era centre.

Participation, documentation and editing of project film. These Residencies have resulted in a major public sculpture for the Irwell Sculpture Trail, Salford, and Grizedale Forest, Cumbria.(See j-pegs).
I have a track record as an artist working on projects in industry, including mining and quarrying, and am currently completing an Artist-In-Residence placement at Parys Mountain Copper Mine in Anglesey, using contemporary visual art as a catalyst for re-engagement with industrial heritage.
I am also currently undertaking one of the “Valley of Stone “ artists commissions, developing ideas for new work based on the working quarrying industry in Rossendale Valley, using the current work force to assist me in the creation of drawings and sculpture on site using the technology and physical processes of quarrying.
Recent projects also include a site-specific commission for the Harold Martin Botanic Garden, Leicester, “An Alternative Herbal”, working with poisonous plants and their ability to ‘kill’ or ‘cure’. (see j-peg) To date, I have successfully completed 20 public art commissions, most won in national and international competitions, for a range of clients, including :-Manchester City Council, Dundee Public Arts Programme, The Environment Agency, London Borough of Barking and Dagenham, Irwell Sculpture Trail, Grizedale Arts, Manchester Museum of Science and Industry and Millennium Estates, 3 of which have won national awards, including an “Art For Architecture” Award from the Royal Society of Arts .
Many commissions have involved the residents and users of the sites directly in all stages of the research and design process, and the site itself - its history, social history, mythology, industrial archaeology, have always been the starting-point for ideas.
I am also a Lecturer and Researcher on the BA Visual Arts Course at the University of Salford.

Examples of experience working with industry and historic sites.

I have recently been awarded an “Artists At Work” Residency from Public Art Wales, to undertake an Artists Residency at Parys Mountain Copper Mine and the Amlwch Industrial Heritage Centre, Anglesey, North Wales. I am working on a project to generate ideas for

new work from the material of copper itself and the toxic landscape left as a legacy from the mining industry. This has also involved working underground in abandoned copper mines, and collaborating with scientists to explore aspects of the mining history through drawing, video, performance and sculpture. The outcome will be an exhibition and publication in 2009.

In 2005-6, I worked on a Research and Development project at Wollaton Hall, Nottingham, resulting in the solo exhibition, “Secrets and Lives”, at the Yard Gallery, making connections between the architectural fabric of an historic house and extinction within the natural history collection housed within it. (See j-peg.)

In 2007, I undertook a Consultancy for Salford City Council to do a Public Art Feasibility Study for the regeneration of Ordsall Hall, an historic house in Salford, developing ideas from a research project into the different eras of the house history.

In 2000, I was awarded a commission for the Irwell Sculpture Trail, Salford, Manchester, where I made a major public sculpture ,“Arresting Time”, on the banks of the River Irwell.
This involved a Residency at Magnesium Elektron, a metal-processing factory adjacent to the site near an industrial estate. This was a novel approach to community involvement, taking my practice as a sculptor into the factory environment, and making the whole creative and making process transparent to the workforce.
The Lowry then commissioned a solo show at the Lowry, “Light Matter”,(2003) enabling me to develop many ideas directly resulting from my experience in the factory.

I recently completed a commission for the “A13 Artescape” Project in Barking, Greater London, which is in the top 200 largest public art projects in the world.(Budget £250,000.) This commission involved the redesign of a prominent space at Barking Quay, in conjunction with the Environment Agency and Halcrow Landscape Architects, evolved from an extensive research project into the history of the Barking fishing fleet, with many innovative ideas and proposals for art works. The completed public space has a large granite floorscape developed from a life-size drawing of a boat, sculptural fencing referencing names of Barking boats, and integrated lighting and seating.

Riswan Iqbal / Love and Etiquette Foundation - Community Art

<img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; I identify myself as a sculptor but in an extended sense to include temporary, performative, installational, responsive and site specific work as well as permanent and public work.

My work is highly responsive to the physical – both environmental and bodily. Most of the work I exhibit has been made in response to physical environments focussing particularly upon properties and proportions of a space as constructs for meaning as well as atmospheres, sensations and specific physical characteristics.

Making process and qualities of material are important to me creatively.Much of the work I make involves a performative element to the making process often using my own body to create sculptural form. Current areas of research and production explore the importance of the kinaesthetic experience, that is to say, the experience of touch and ‘doing’ as a means of responding to and engaging with the world. In this sense, the movement of time and the notion of the transitory become important.

Currently I am working on a commissioned ceramic ’pavement’ as part of a tripartite project involving artists from Macerata in Northern Italy and in Transylvania in Romania. The idea of the project is to make work in response to the specific uniqueness of the local environment and the cultural vagaries or similarities in each of the 3 locations. Each artist will respond to aspects of the environment; material, optical and cultural. We will be working in all 3 locations to create the pieces, and to work with students from 3 universities to realise the work.

I am interested to work on the Burnley: Hiddenplace project. My particular interest is with the nature of the architectural spaces given – the small and complex, the historic patination specific to this region. I am also interested in the qualities of the walkways and the aspect of passage. I am attracted to the poetic approach as intimated by the title of the project. The tendency of my work is to utilise the nuanced, subtle and ambiguous, ambivalent and unexpected. The nature of the processes I use and the mode in which I work would lend itself towards the project. I hope I may contribute to the project.

Short description of work shown in attached documentation:

•The ‘Clasp’ sculpture installed as a permanent piece was made for the inauguration of a building functioning for the education of nurses on the University of Salford campus. The clasp form was made in response to the notion of protective gesture – responding to the function of the building and to Mary Seacole to whom the building was dedicated. The project was made in collaboration with Architects AFL and with children from Albion High School.
•The installational sculptures ‘Misshapes’ exhibited in Clermont Ferrand were sited works made in response to the cell-type environment of the Gallery 13 Bis, drawing on the notion of seepage and natural growth.
•The performative floor based pieces ‘Ingresso’ and ‘Crabwalk’ further explore notions of transition; linear and historic, utilising the surface of the ground to describe passages of time and the leaving of traces.

Daniel Scanlin - Photography

My name is Daniel, i'm a Burnley born freelance photographer and during the last twelve months i have been involved in various projects, both personal and professional, including photography workshops with 11 to 18 year olds within the stoneyholme and daneshouse area of Burnley.

The project is called 'Eye to eye', and some of the photography created already during these workshops have been exhibited in Burnley town centre for the rest of the town to see what goes on within the different communities of Burnley. From this, the Artist I have been collaborating with, curated and invited me to be involved in an exhibition titled 'Move', which was held at the Albert Dock, Liverpool. For this I had six pieces of photographic work exhibited , and the contents were based in and around St. Theodores R.C. High School, which has been empty since July due to a new build which will take place on the same site and will be ready in 2010.

I have photographed several weddings this year, one in Barcelona, one in Tuscany, but mostly in sunny Burnley and surrounding areas. Also i have just become the in-house photographer for a local publishing company called Jordan Communications.

I'd like to be considered for this project as it would be an exciting and great opportunity for me to be involved in and would show people what Burnley is about. I feel i could add visual pleasure to the viewer in the final showcase.

My initial ideas would be to photograph many of the empty and beautiful buildings in and around Burnley town centre, such as the old mills which were a major part of the building of Burnley we know today, the old court house, St Theordores RC High School and other small un-noticed spaces using and extending my torch technique.

Kerry Morrison - Environmental Art

My approach would be that of process based investigation of place, which will hopefully lead to finding hiddenplaces. What happens once I find the hiddenplaces will depend upon the circumstance of the place, inclusive of people, wildlife, topography, etc.

In 2008 I designed and built a push along portable studio. My little studio enables me to explore places, fully equipped with all the artistic paraphernalia that I may need to record and notate elements within the landscape that attract my attention. There are bespoke spaces within the studio for a map (external clip mount), a microscope, digital sound recording equipment (external mount), a time delay camera (housed inside the unit – hole that camera lens fits through), A2 paper (tray), drawing board, collecting vessels, drawing equipment, and other ‘stuff’.
During some of the programmed festival dates I would like to perambulate my portable studio through the streets Burnley. Whenever anything catches my attention, the cart will be pulled to a halt, and parked up. It’s doors and draws will be opened and the necessary paraphernalia for recording what has caught my eyes or ears will be removed and used.

The action of perambulating will be only one element. Another element will be the pauses, the times when, and places where, I stop, to look, to listen, and to record. The actions undertaken within the stationary positions create spaces for the public, the curious passer-by, to interact with me. People are most likely to approach me, and ask me what I am up to, when the cart and I are stationary. These are the times when conversations will happen, the times when I can ask people about there special hiddenplaces

As I journey I will be accumulating artifacts and anecdotes.

statement of interest

I am interested in hiddenplaces because within my practice I respond to environmental issues, and public concerns within a given locale. Usually the ‘locale’ is not my own, but hiddenlaces presents an opportunity for me to explore my own geographical area.

Conversation lies at the heart of my working processes. It is through dialogue that my work evolves. Conversations during the residence will enable me to develop new work specifically for, and about the hidden places and spaces of Burnley

about my practice

I am an environmental artist who works within the public realm, “that space where anyone can be, or can go – usually free of charge”. I create work in response to environmental issues within a given locale and global context. Since 2000 I have worked in collaboration with ecologists, environmental scientists, landscape architects, and conservationists. (www.morrison-prowse.com )
My approach is process led, socially engaging, art/ecology practice that investigates places and the communities that inhabit them. Collaborating, combined with reading scientific research papers has enabled me to develop a methodology for recording, evidencing, and evaluating projects. My aim is to navigate through the complexities of the social, environmental, and economic, via live art and happenings, action installations, temporary and semi-permanent public art, and writing.

As process led practice, my projects often take place over periods of time.
In 2006 I began an investigation into brownfield sites in Liverpool, mapping and evaluating over 100 sites for their value for experiencing nature within an urban environment (www.liverpoolwastelands.blogspot.com). This work is still in progress, and has developed into an art/science team investigation into a contaminated brownfield site in Liverpool.

Earlier this year I competed a commission for Independent Photography in Greenwich, London, as part of their Peninsula programme. The project, “100 cauliflowers – 85 here, 15 elsewhere”, explored the possibility of providing growing spaces for residents in the area. (www.100cauliflowers.com). Through the process of community engagement, and project delivery, the work became a discussion point amongst residents and local councilors for the inclusion of allotment provision in housing developments.

Public realm projects in 2008 have included: Gong-ju Nature Art Biennial, Korea, Temporary Gardens, Aachen, Germany, PVAF Forum, Scotland, and the nature of bury at commissioned by Bury Art Gallery.

Past work includes site specific commissions and exhibitions in the U.K., U.S.A., Korea, Japan, Czech Republic, Finland, France, Macedonia, and Switzerland.

I’d like to be considered for the project…

Because it is of interest to me, and because I believe I can discover some very discrete hidden spaces through my method of artistic inquiry. I have attached an approach that I would like to undertake, an approach that could lead to some interesting and unpredictable finds in Burnley.

Zumamedia / Matt Garside & Steve Richardson

Zumamedia are two artists, Matt garside and Steve Richardson, both with about thirteen years experience working predominantly in digital media, video, photography and 2D design work. We are based in Pendle/Burnley area.

The majority of our work is in Community Arts and Voluntary sectors. Many of our projects are in collaboration with community groups and related organisations, a number of which are community regeneration projects.

We are particularly interested in the Hiddenplace project as we feel it would allow us to be expressive and to create a unique piece of work, with fewer restrictions on our ideas and to be able to work locally.
